Summary:

An interview with Juan Carlos De Martin. From Google's English: "[Q:] What are the benefits of ' open access ?
De Martin . The advantages are obvious: thanks to ' open access , in fact, the results of the research can be read, studied and used by many more people. This leads, on the one hand, the 'republic of science' to work best, because there are more researchers excluded from the debate just because their institutions are not rich enough to subscribe to all the journals (which is the case not only of University of the Third World but also in many European and American universities). I, for example, quite often I get messages of researchers from developing countries who, after reading my article available on the page of my research group, bring you in contact with me, they ask me questions: it is clear that without the web and sharing of research results that could not happen. For this reason it is also reasonable to expect that the ' open access produces an increase in efficiency: it will be easier, in fact, is to avoid duplication of efforts directed to the same goal, is to build on the findings of those who have gone before us. On the other hand, with the ' open access gain access to research results also in companies, associations, public institutions and ordinary citizens, with an economic impact, cultural and civil not easy to quantify, but certainly very considerable. Suppose that company X wants to know if in Italy there are universities who are working on the polymer molecule Y or Z: the ' open access would meet in a few seconds by doing a simple search online. These positive effects on science and society as a whole explain why many research funders, including the European Commission and a growing number of national governments (including the United States and the United Kingdom), have already imposed the ' open access to search results that fund. [Q:] And what are the disadvantages of ' open access ? De Martin . Frankly I do not see...."
