"Awareness of and comfort level with open access increase with tenure. Authors should be sufficiently educated about this publishing model early on in their research career, so that they are sufficiently well informed to decide when they should or should not choose to publish open access. We found that the most common reason for publishing open access was access to a wider audience, while the common reasons for not publishing open access were unrelated to any inherent lack of trust in this model."
