Charleston Conference: Breaking from the Past

Connotea Imports 2012-07-31

Summary:

"This year marks 30 years for the Charleston Conference....During each of the conference's two morning keynotes, a break from past practice was proposed, coupled with suggestions for new approaches to making materials available to users. In terms of books and serials, University of Utah associate director for scholarly resources and collections Rick Anderson told the audience that libraries have outgrown old practices for building collections, while consultant and GiantChair CEO Joseph Esposito described a new model for collaborating on digital collections—but cautioned that unfettered access to those collections can subvert efforts toward financial sustainability....The big game-changers in the next five years will be Google Books and HathiTrust, which Anderson called "not quite as good as but infinitely better than Google Books," as its works are far more discoverable. Google Books still has significant outstanding metadata and copyright issues, but Anderson likened the project to a gleaming 18-wheeler in a parking lot missing all of its tires—crucial pieces are missing, but then, "we know how to buy tires, and we know how to get them on," he said. Together, Google Books and HathiTrust will "effectively knock down the walls of research libraries." ..."
