Summary:

"It appears the University of California is no longer contemplating a boycott of the esteemed science journal Nature. In a statement released Wednesday by the University of California and Nature Publishing Group, the entities announced "an agreement to work together to address the current licensing challenges as well as the larger issues of sustainability in the scholarly communication process." ...The basic journal model "needs to change," says [Laine Farley, executive director of the University's California Digital Library]. That's the system in which university faculty members "contribute the labor to produce the articles that go into these journals, they do the peer review, they often are editors, and then the institution has to buy back the access to the output of their research," by paying large fees to subscribe to them."
