More on the PLoS Reader

Summary:

"I should explain that PLoS Reader is not a project masterminded by PLoS, but rather a modest application that I originally cooked up to show off some open source page animation code. When that application turned out to be a usable way to read things, I looked for real-world content to pair it with. PLoS had seven journals’ worth of beautifully typeset, CC-licensed articles in an RSS feed that I could get at immediately. (In that respect, PLoS “gets it” in a way that most publishers don’t.) I could have foisted my creation on the public without any participation whatsoever by the human beings at PLoS, but after a brief meeting with Pete, Sara, and Liz, the application was granted the additional benefit of PLoS’s name and publicity channels — in addition to a good deal of critical feedback. What few improvements were insisted on, I made, and the result is now available on the App Store...."
