Die Kartause Gaming als Erinnerungsort der österreichischen Geschichte

Vom 10. – 12. März 2017 findet in der Kartause Gaming in Niederösterreich eine Tagung zum Thema „Die Kartause Gaming als Erinnerungsort der österreichischen Geschichte“ statt. Veranstalter sind das Institut für Österreichische Geschichtsforschung und die Franciscan University of Steubenville gemeinsam mit dem Diözesanarchiv St. Pölten und dem Verein zur Erforschung monastischer Gelehrsamkeit in der Frühen Neuzeit.

Ein Schwerpunkt der Tagung liegt auf der Geschichte der Bibliothek der Kartause Gaming und ihrer ehemaligen Handschriften- und Buchbestände. Dabei sollen auch der Bibliotheksraum, das Freskenprogramm und die Ausstattung der Bibliothek thematisiert werden. Daneben werden verschiedene Themen aus der Geschichte der Kartause Gaming behandelt, wie etwa die Beziehungen der Kartause zu ihrer Umgebung oder die Entwicklung der Grundherrschaft. Für die Analyse der Funktion der Kartause Gaming als Erinnerungsort ist außerdem die Auseinandersetzung mit Anton Steyerers Commentarii pro historia Alberti II. ducis Austriae cognomento Sapientis sowie mit der 1732 erschienenen Gaminger Hausgeschichte Pandectae seculares von großer Bedeutung.

Beiträge zu den folgenden Themengruppen sind willkommen:

• Geschichte der Kartause Gaming sowie Regionalgeschichte der Gegend
• Kunstgeschichte der Kartause Gaming sowie Fragen zur Architektur und zur materiellen Überlieferung
• Bibliotheksbestände von Gaming und die darin vertretenen Autoren, Fragen zur Handschriftenkunde und Bibliotheksgeschichte (auch anderer Klöster)
• Monastische und insbesondere kartäusische Gelehrsamkeit, klösterliche Historiographie

Beitragsvorschläge auf Deutsch oder Englisch bitte mit einem kurzen Abstract (750 bis 1500 Zeichen) bis zum 20. Januar 2017 an Patrick Fiska (patrick.fiska@univie.ac.at). Reise- und Aufenthaltskosten der Referentinnen und Referenten werden übernommen.

The Charterhouse of Gaming as a Reservoir of Memory and a Monument of Austrian History

Between March 10th and 12th, 2017, the Institute of Austrian Historical Research at the University of Vienna and the Franciscan University of Steubenville, jointly with the Diocesan Archives of St. Pölten and the Association for the Study of Monastic Learning in the Early Modern Period, will host a conference at the Charterhouse in Gaming (Lower Austria).

The conference will focus on two primary areas. The first is the history of the library of the Charterhouse. Emphasis shall be given to the library itself and its manuscript holdings, while other topics for discussion will include the library’s architectural space, fresco program and decoration. The second area of focus will be the history of the Charterhouse. Various topics concerning the long story of the site and community shall be examined – such as the monastery’s relationship with the surrounding area or the development of the house’s manorial system. In addition, crossing over between the two areas of focus – a survey of Anton Steyerer‘s Commentarii pro historia Alberti II. ducis Austriae cognomento Sapientis and the history of the Charterhouse of Gaming Pandectae seculares from 1732, for example – may also yield subjects for discussion.

We welcome papers relating to the following subjects:

• history of the Charterhouse of Gaming and history of the region
• art history of the Charterhouse of Gaming, questions of architecture and material tradition
• holdings of the library, authors represented there, questions of codicology and library history
• monastic and particularly Carthusian scholarship, monastic historiography
