Summary:

Hi everyone! I'm hosting an SGS next week with evelyn douek on her work on content cartels. Please let me know if you'd like to attend and I will send you a calendar invite (if you are not on the org list already...). Description: *SGS: on The Rise of Content Cartels | Hosted by Robyn Caplan* Join us for a Small-Group Session with evelyn douek on “Content Cartels.”  Should platforms be allowed to collaborate in the setting and enforcement of content standards? In what ways are they doing so already? And what problems can be solved, or introduced by new forms of collaboration in content standards-setting? On July 14th, Robyn Caplan will be hosting a small group session with evelyn douek, SJD candidate at Harvard Law School, affiliate at Berkman Klein Center, and author of the paper “The Rise of Content Cartels.”  douek will share her research on the existing ways platforms collaborate–such as in the removal of child sexual abuse material (CSAM), and the industry-led Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT)–to explain why platforms are urging collaboration as a solution to propaganda and other content concerns. She will explore the potential threats content cartels pose to free speech, and put forth an agenda to “create productive and legitimate cooperation” between platforms when it may be beneficial. Please join us for a presentation and a Q&A! This idea is really fascinating from a number of different perspectives and can be approached from a variety of disciplines (economics, info sci, law, anthro, etc). It will be a lot of fun.
