Summary:

"Citations play an important role in scientific discourse, in research practice and in bibliometrics. Recently, there are increasing initiatives that make citations available as open data for free reuse. The paper describes the state of development of these initiatives and shows that a critical mass of data could emerge in the near future that would give libraries new perspectives. The DFG project Linked Open Citation Database (LOC-DB) will be presented as a concrete opportunity for participation in libraries.
