Open Content and the Emerging Global Meta-University | EDUCAUSE

Summary:

"I admit to using the word open in a loose manner here. OpenCourseWare refers to educational content that is available on the World Wide Web free of charge. Open software generally refers to software whose source code is readily available and can be modified by users for their own purposes or to software whose continual development is assisted by a volunteer community of code writers, such as Linux. In the following discussion, I use open also to describe nonprofit electronic content and archiving initiatives that make materials widely available on the Web through some form of institutional user charges."
