Mapping Open Science & Open Scholarship in Europe — SPARC Europe

Summary:

"In recent years Europe has seen an acceleration in Open Science / Scholarship policy (OS), service offers, infrastructure development, and a continuing need for supporting cultural change.1 These areas are increasingly being addressed by many organisations across Europe that serve Research Funder Organisations (RFOs), Research Performing Organisations (RPOs), their libraries and diverse research communities. However, to help implement Open Science in Europe most effectively, more transparency is needed on the OS activities that are being carried out in a European context. Bringing to light where work is being done, and where not, will serve as an impetus for discussion on how to strengthen OS support in Europe.

As part of its mission to make Open Science / Scholarship the default, SPARC Europe has initiated a small study to look at the OS work of key organisations active in Europe creating a snapshot in time on Europe’s OS support activity. In a rapidly changing environment, it reflects the situation in 2015 and 2016 until autumn.

Where are organisations putting their efforts in Open Science? Where are certain activities and competencies more concentrated in Europe, and where might it make sense to perhaps work together more, and speak more in unison? Which types of activities or outputs are less frequently addressed by Europe’s organisations? This paper begins to illustrate the scope of activity and outputs to support the implementation of Open Science and will attempt to illustrate the OS activity landscape in Europe."
