Summary:

"The Community Advocate works closely with others on the Support and Safety team to help protect, empower and engage people involved in or impacted by the Wikimedia movement. The Advocate seeks to protect and enhance community health through facilitating the work of our vast community of international volunteers; through helping other non-engineering teams and departments successfully collaborate with community members and groups; and through investigating and responding as directed to threats of violence and other threats to the safety of the Wikimedia projects, communities and the public. The Community Advocate is expected to collaborate with others in a respectful manner, to encourage collegial engagement, to treat with discretion private information, to be creative and open to new solutions, to be supportive of other Advocates, and to be flexible in assignments. This is a sometimes chaotic and challenging environment that offers best opportunities for those who work well both independently and with others.

This work involves coordinating with other staff in team rotation to ensure 24/7 coverage for emergencies. This work may include evaluating threats of self-violence or terrorism, or processing inappropriate imagery, including imagery involving minors.
  • Keeps up with and reports on key developments in the Wikimedia movement
  • Implements Support team program work related to community health and growth, such as working with communities and staff to implement ongoing anti-harassment programs.

  • Assists with correspondence management, which will include answering questions from both users and the public in a timely, efficient, and respectful manner.
  • Researches and reports on issues related to community health and growth, which may include working to identify and implement solutions through collaboration with community, appropriate staff, and external organizations.
  • Builds relationships with Wikimedians, including key community members, around the world."
