Open Access with Sage - UM Library - Maastricht University

"Dutch universities and publisher Sage are moving significantly towards Open Access. It has been agreed that for 2017 to the end of 2019, academics working at Dutch research institutions will be able to publish with Open Access in 97% of Sage’s journals.

The new agreement made by Dutch universities and publisher Sage follows a successful collaboration in 2015 and 2016, when the two parties already agreed to Open Access for 20% of Sage’s journals. The Open University of the Netherlands will also benefit from the current deal covering 97% of these periodicals. Full 100% coverage is not possible because of dependency on societies which have to give their permission.

How to benefit from Sage’s scheme?

Sage offers authors the option to make their articles freely available upon publication in most subscription-based journals. It also enables authors to comply with funding body requirements, where publishing research papers Open Access is a stipulation of funding, while still publishing their article in the subscription journal of their choice.

These are the actions in a nutshell:

• The corresponding author should be recognised as researcher of a Dutch university, based on a proper email affiliation
• The 100% discount applies for 786 subscription titles, covered by the current overview of journal titles with a nationwide Open Access discount: please go to the National agreements and click on the title list compiled by SURFmarket
• Sage has to ask for permission for the 100% discount to learned societies, who take advantage of the Sage-platform. This applies for 40 journals, identified by the addition: ‘ask the library’
• After acceptance of the paper, the author will receive an email from Sage with a form about the nature of the Dutch agreement. As next step an application form must be filled in and returned immediately in order to publish the paper OA without cost.  Please note: on the form you will be asked for a code, which you do not need to fill in."
