"The closing seminar of the Finland – a model country for green open access (SURIMA 2015–2016) project, a joint effort by the University of Eastern Finland and the University of Jyväskylä, was held in Jyväskylä on 24 February 2017.  The seminar focused on open science and self-archiving of scientific publications. Self-archiving constitutes an easy and cost-effective way to gain added visibility and citations for scientific publications and, in consequence, to increase the impact of research.

As an outcome of the project, the University of Eastern Finland opened the UEF eRepository publication archive where scientific articles by the university’s researchers can be self-archived. The university’s library is responsible for maintaining the publication archive and for making the related services available to researchers. UEF eRepository can be accessed by anyone, and the user interface is available in English.

Digitarium wins Open Science Award – browse natural history collections online

Awards recognising the promotion of open science were also presented to representatives of both universities in the closing seminar. The Open Science Award of the University of Eastern Finland was presented to Digitarium. Digitarium is a joint digitisation centre of the Finnish Museum of Natural History and the University of Eastern Finland. The centre has carried out pioneering work in the digitisation of natural history collections, making these collections available to the public, and in the related training and method development. So far, Digitarium has digitised nearly 400,000 specimens for various organisations, some of them openly accessible.
