Summary:

"A National Workshop on Provincial Open Educational Resources (OER) Policy Implementation was recently held at Hotel OZO in Colombo. The workshop was a part of OER Integration Initiative at the Open University of Sri Lanka and was a joint initiative by the Open University of Sri Lanka and Commonwealth of Learning.

'We believed that Open Education Resources are the way forward, whereby we will be able to make available, quality educational material for everybody. At the Open University, in 2015, we developed an OER Policy. Based on that policy, now, we are trying to develop lesson material. At the Open University lesson materials are in distance mode. We give students lesson material to study, self-instructional materials. Traditionally, what we have been doing is to develop our own material. If you look at the web, there are very high quality materials available so we did not need invent the wheel again. What we decided, was to look at the possibility of using such learning material for our students.

Within the next two or three months, we should have a model base on which our lecturers will be able to use material available on the web, OER for lesson resources. With the help of the Commonwealth of Learning, we want to take this news to the school sector as well. Last year we carried out some preliminary work and came up with a draft policy for each of the provinces in Sri Lanka. Shironica P. Karunanayake was involved in the project. We considered how we would be using these materials and disseminate the knowledge and what would be the licenses under which we will be doing that. This workshop is the culmination of our efforts and we brought together representatives of the all nine provinces. We hope that we will be able to come out with an OER Policy suitable for use in all nine provinces. Based on this, practitioners will be able to prepare their own OER's or download OER available or modified. ', said Prof. S.A.Ariadurai, Vice Chancellor, The Open University of Sri Lanka."
