OpenAIRE: Europe’s Hub for Open Science | Digital Single Market

How does this work?

OpenAIRE has a dual-core: we are both a well-established human network on the one hand, and an innovative digital infrastructure on the other. For us, it is the people who make the difference! Therefore, our knowledge network brings together professionals from research libraries, open scholarship organisations, national e-Infrastructure, IT and data experts. At the core of this organisation there is a pan-European network, National Open Access Desks (NOADs). It is made up of local Open Science experts present in every EU country and beyond, who work nationally and internationally to develop policies and help researchers adopt Open Science practices. In addition, we produce groundbreaking research on topics like legal issues in open research data, OA mandate implementation, linking of scholarly information and open peer review. Moreover, we host innovative pilot projects such as the FP7 post-grant Open Access publishing funds pilot, to support and enhance the European commitment to open science and open access.

The OpenAIRE platform makes your research findable, accessible, interoperable and re-usable, enables easy project reporting by linking research outputs to funding information, and provides tools to monitor the trends of Open Access to publications and research data. 

We have also developed a wealth of valuable resources:

• toolkits for different stakeholders to understand the opportunities offered by Open Access to research,
• webinars and workshops on hot Open Science topics,
• a helpdesk for researchers.

What does the future hold?

Since the beginning, we have expanded rapidly and grown to maturity. This has been mirrored by the European Commission’s increasing commitments to Open Access and Open Science. The FP7 Open Access pilot got a universal mandate in H2020, and the H2020 Open Research Data Pilot was expanded to all H2020 projects. We are very excited about the EC’s European Open Science Cloud initiative and we will closely collaborate with the EC’s EOSCpilot project in order to implement a catalogue of common services for researchers. Moreover, we will shortly begin implementing the cutting-edge idea  of Open Science as a Service (OSaaS) through OpenAIRE-Connect, extending existing OpenAIRE services to deliver out-of-the-box, on-demand deployable tools for Open Science. We will also widen our human network, both geographically and thematically, and we’ll continue to promote the culture of openness by increasing user engagement and bridging the gap between user needs and services."
