"What is open research?

Open research includes the use of open source software applications, open publication of research findings and free availability of data sets used in research (open data). Open research has benefits for individuals, institutions, research funders, governments and for society as a whole.

Open access

Open access to research outputs ensures that research findings are made available to anybody with an internet connection, anywhere in the world. The application of licences granting maximum opportunities for reuse deliver true open access: free of barriers to access or reuse. Open access to date has mainly focussed upon journal articles. Opportunities for open access monographs are emerging, with recognition of the importance of monograph format and the advantages that open access publishing can deliver.

Open data

Open data are data that are freely available to access, use and share. Data that are openly available can be reused and built upon to develop new resources and further research and innovation."
