Summary:

"FGV’s Department of Public Policy Analysis (DAPP) participated in the event titled 'Open Data on Healthcare in Brazil' on June 1. The meeting was held at Google Campus Sao Paulo through a partnership between the startup company Eokoe and the Brazilian Department of Health. DAPP was represented by researcher Bárbara Barbosa, who spoke about best practices regarding the use and disclosure of open data.

Brazil currently ranks 8th in the Open Data Index, according to a joint survey conducted by DAPP and the Open Knowledge Foundation (OKFN). According to the researcher, in order for a piece of data to be considered open, it must be available to the public, bear no costs to users, it has to be provided in formats that allow proper use and editing, and it must have a clear license. Meeting these requirements allows data to be used to generate information and research, such as many projects carried out by DAPP.

Among the initiatives by the Department of Public Policy Analysis in the field of healthcare and data are surveys outlining the population affected by breast cancer and the incidence of dengue fever cases across Brazilian states and public investments to help eradicate the transmitting mosquito, among others."
