Summary:

"Self-archiving (green open access)

Research outputs can be made available as open access in an institutional or subject repository. This is referred to as self-archiving or "green" open access and can increase the visibility of your work, without the need to pay open access charges.

You can make your work available as open access in the University of Exeter's institutional repository ORE. Items in ORE are discoverable in the repository and appear in search engine results. Each publication in ORE has a unique persistent identifier (uri or handle), providing secure and permanent access.

Depositing to ORE

Deposit via Symplectic to ORESymplectic guides are available.

Deposit the accepted version, upon acceptance, to ensure compliance with HEFCE, for the REF.

Publishers often permit deposit of the accepted version (following peer review and amendments) but not the final published PDF. The publisher may specify a period of time before your paper can be made freely available in ORE (an embargo). You can check that the version you are depositing complies with publisher requirements in Symplectic at the point of uploading the file.

Deposit upon acceptance, Open Research will check and approve your deposit and apply any embargo required. Whilst your publication is under embargo, the item record will be discoverable but the full text cannot be viewed or downloaded. The embargo will run from the date of publication and lift automatically once the embargo period has passed.

Depositing to ORE may also meet the open access requirements of your funder of research. Publisher-imposed embargos can conflict with funder requirements. If the journal embargo exceeds the maximum allowed by your funder, you may need to pay for open access in order to comply.
