Summary:

"The Web enables new means of publishing and sharing knowledge, but our tools for evaluating the impact of scholarly research have not kept pace with these possibilities. By the end of this four week course, participants will have a thorough grounding in dominant metrics for evaluating scholarly impact, as well as some emerging alternatives. For the final project, class participants will apply what they've learned to developing an instructional or collection development project at their own institutions.

Outline of class topics by week:

  • Overview of informetrics and the impact factor--history, uses, strengths, weaknesses
  • Alternatives to impact factor 1--Eigenfactor and h-index: uses, strengths, weaknesses
  • Alternatives to impact factor 2--Altmetrics: uses, strengths, weaknesses
  • Final projects--application to local situation"
