Summary:

"Purpose of this Document

For more than a decade the movement for Open Science has evolved from a collection of small, localized efforts to a broad international network of institutions, organizations, governments, practitioners, advocates, and funders. While significant progress has been made on both expanding the understanding and practice of Open Science, it has not reached its full potential of entering mainstream research on a global scale. Herein, we consider Open Science to refer to the process, communication, and re-use of research that holistically includes all research disciplines.

The goals and broader vision for Open Science are outlined in foundational documents including the Budapest Open Access Initiative, [insert The Open Archives Initiative, Vienna Principles, Scholarly Commons principles, The Panton Principles]. From this, there have been dozens of declarations, charters, and statements about the priorities of Open Science. The result of this is that there are now numerous competing or overlapping definitions of what Open Science comprises in terms of both research principles and practice, which aim to encapsulate the movement towards fostering scientific growth alongside public access. Herein, we consider Open Science to be analogous to a ‘boundary object’, in that it is flexibly adaptive, interpreted differently across communities but with enough immutable content to maintain integrity. We find Fecher and Friesike (2013)’s five “schools of thought” to be particularly useful here: Infrastructure, Measurement, Public, Democratic and Pragmatic. Further, we want to suggest a sixth school of Community and Inclusion."
