"At the start of the Open Education Week, SURF and the Special Interest Group Open Educational Resources (OER) present the OER 2013 Trend Report. One of the conclusions of the report is that open online education is breaking worldwide, partly due to the high popularity of MOOCs (massive open online courses).

This breakthrough takes place among so-called self-learners: students, professionals and elderly people who want to gain high-quality knowledge without following a regular education. Enhancing employability and personal development are important motives."
