Scholarship in “open” science – CyberScience Blog Fall 2017

Summary:

"The Scholarly Commons reading that focused on the idea of “open” science were really interesting to me – by definition of what science is, it’s very easy to assume that people who have information about a specific topic are going to share it and the information will be publicly useable for all other applications. When we introduce scholarship to this scheme, however, the issue is no longer fact vs. fiction, but rather becomes about a hierarchy of knowledge and who owns that information. As the Bosman, et al. article states, many new initiatives for open scholarly communication are still strongly driven by business models. Their proposal of a “scholarly commons” was thought-provoking: they want to create a pool of resources for all researchers, with little influence by money or business."
