Presidents United to Solve Hunger (PUSH), Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition (GODAN), and The Association of American Universities and Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (AAU-APLU) have recently highlighted the benefits and challenges of sharing data, managing data, and maintaining research data systems. In fact, U.S. agencies and foundations such as Gates are increasingly requiring data management plans and open sharing of research data. PUSH’s report, Open Access and Open Data at PUSH Universities, reveals that PUSH universities do not have open data policies, and only 15 have open access policies and portals. In addition, there seems to be an lack of awareness, capability, infrastructure, and support to comply with open data and funders’ requirements. Some universities have repositories, while a few coordinate efforts of the researchers with the offices of sponsored programs and libraries.
