Summary:

European Commissioner for the Digital Agenda Neelie Kroes announced the EU Open Data strategy, which will spur member states to allow the reuse of public data by private companies and organisations thanks to the modification of the already existing Directive 2003/98/EC.

The strategy is expected to deliver a €40 billion boost to the EU's economy each year. In addition, the opening up of public data resources could stir up job growth. To this end, the Commission will fund research and use different instruments to test and promote the development of innovative solutions, and to ensure the widest possible uptake of open data.

Funding will include: 7th Framework and CIP and from 2014 onwards Horizon 2020.
