The University of Jaén is one of the nine Spanish universities, and the only one in Andalusia, that obtained a European study, as coordinator, on bilingual learning in bilingual contexts. The research project, called ADiBE, will be financed with almost 200,000 euros and will be carried out over the next three years. It will be coordinated by María Luisa Pérez Cañado, accredited to the chair of the Department of English Philology and researcher responsible for the research team EI_HUM7_2017.
The aim of the study, which will begin with the start of the next academic year, is to carry out a European comparison on the functioning of the Aicle programmes - acronyms for integrated learning of foreign languages and contents - with students of different abilities and levels of performance in monolingual contexts. The research is directly related to the challenge of inclusive, innovative and reflective societies of the state programme "Horizon 2020" and aims to offer empirical evidence and innovative resources to help make bilingual education an inclusive reality for all types of students.
The UJA researchers will carry out a comparative analysis of the main difficulties encountered in bilingual education and the measures being implemented in Europe to address diversity within CLIL programmes. Based on these results, open educational resources will be designed for bilingual students of different abilities, as well as teacher training modules aimed at preparing teachers to deal with diversity in the bilingual classroom. "Attention to diversity is, without a doubt, one of the greatest challenges we currently face in bilingual programs," said María Luisa Pérez Cañado, who added that the goal of this program "is to provide students and teachers with tools based on empirical evidence to be able to face it with guarantees.
Researchers will make the results of the study and the pedagogical and training resources generated available to society, on their website and on open educational portals.
