[Google transl.] Open Textbooks - An Untapped Opportunity for Universities, Colleges and Schools
The pilot phase of the United Kingdom's open textbook project was completed in April 2018. This article discusses the project, what open textbooks are and why they are an untapped opportunity for universities, colleges and schools. North American models of open textbook development and adoption are designed to help reduce the financial concerns of college students and improve learning opportunities, and provide much-needed resources for schools (or the K12 system in the U.S. and Canada).
The ability to reuse books leads to innovative and engaging pedagogies that include students as co-authors. However, in the UK, the level of debate and awareness of the opportunities offered by open textbooks and the existence of a small number of British initiatives is low. The aim of the United Kingdom's open textbook project was to raise public awareness and organize activities to promote the adoption of open textbooks. The results of the project are discussed, as well as the political, cultural and practical changes needed to broaden these approaches.
