Summary:

[google transl.] The world's oldest library will be digitised and available for free

The library is the oldest in the world and is located inside the Monastery of St. Catherine, at Mount Sinai, in Egypt. Its collection is very valuable and the Monastery in which the library is located is of immense historical, artistic and cultural value for the Christians of the East.

In April 2017 the area surrounding the Monastery was in fact the subject of an attack by the jihadists of Isis as a bulwark of Christianity in the eastern world. The structure has also been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002 and its construction dates back to the 6th century, making it the oldest existing Christian monastery in the world.

Since then, however, the first part of a restoration process has been completed, which has brought to light the beauty of the structure, including the library. The library's patrimony is vast: the oldest texts date back to the 4th century and consist of more than four thousand documents of inestimable value. It would include codes and documents in several languages (Greek, Hebrew, Armenian, Syriac, Coptic, Georgian) and also the oldest Bible in history. It is therefore not surprising that it is of lesser value only to the Vatican Apostolic Library. Some of the texts that came from this library are already on display in some very important museums worldwide.
