Researchers are still too-often confused about open access. Funders can struggle to gather information about the outcomes of their open access policies. Institutions have to train busy researchers in the various permutations of open access, administer funds for gold APCs and run institutional repositories. Publishers are running multiple, parallel administrative processes for manuscript submission and to ensure that charges, policies and discovery are all supported effectively.
Persistent identifiers (like ORCID iDs for researchers or DOIs for articles) can provide consistency, reliably open information and can add trust to the open access system. In this workshop, we will explore the processes and painpoints in open access article publishing and look at the ways that identifiers could be used to streamline, automate and improve the experience of OA for authors, their employers and publishers alike. We will explore innovations in identifiers and discuss the ways that these can improve business intelligence, reporting, and researcher support in institutions.
