Summary:

Google English: "Are repositories the way to open access?

If it is up to the big scientific funds, short-term research must be completely open and accessible to everyone. For the open access discussion, this means, among other things, that publications, theses and inaugural speeches must be made accessible. More than once large online repositories are designated as a solution, but are they?

The European Commission recently presented the new plans for the successor of Horizon 2020 . These plans show that it is serious about the intention to make the scientific process more transparent and accessible. Between 2521 and 2027, no less than € 25.8 billion will be made available for open science. At the national level, NWO also plays a major role in its new open science strategy , based on the conviction that this will improve the innovative power.

Open science does not only mean that articles are freely accessible, but also methods, data, software, peer review and teaching materials. A substantial amount of (research) data, which in one way or another will have to be shared with each other. NWO explains the following about how this should be done: "Open Science requires a new infrastructure with data repositories for the storage of research data in a safe and reliable manner."

A major job that first of all raises the question of what exactly is meant by a repository. What makes a repository different from a large hard disk? Which standards does it have to meet to really add value? And the next not insignificant question: who keeps it? Who is responsible?..."
