But also a major transition from existing to new, integrated policy. What is this about, what is the intention and what are the steps?

Did you know that the Dutch universities have connections up to 100 Gbyte per second? Did you know that the SKA project (Square Kilometer Array) will ask for more data transport than ten times the current global internet traffic?

Did you know that Europe has a functioning supercomputer infrastructure, consisting of several TOP500-rated supercomputers, and that there are European data and grid infrastructures for supporting science in Europe?

Do you share the vision (pdf) of the High Level Expert Group of the European Commission that 90 percent of the data in the world has been generated in the past two years?

Perhaps, perhaps not, but these are the starting points for a major action aimed at deeply integrating these reasonably independent infrastructures into one coherent infrastructure, with the open sharing of data as the primary guideline...."
