Following June 1989 resignation of most of the editorial board of Vegetatio, editor Eddy van der Maarel published an editorial for the first issue Journal of Vegetation Science (February 1990) on the need for the new journal. The former journal had been published by W. Junk (later Nijhoff, then Kluwer).
