Summary:

Workshop, Wednesday 11 March, 2020, 2.00pm - 4.00pm
Rountree Room, Biolink, Sydney, Australia

Many scientists wish to improve their scientific practices by increasing their transparency, openness and reproducibility at every step of the experimental process. In this workshop, I focus on two important, interwoven open science practices: Pre-registration and open-access analyses.

Although using these practices can be effective for improving your science, they can also seem daunting, difficult and scary. In the first hour, I will give an outline of what is necessary for a good pre-registration, speak about the benefits of pre-registering experiments and offer tips from my own pre-registration experiences. In the second hour, I will explain how pre-registration can make data analysis less stressful and provide tips for creating readable, organized and understandable code for collaborators, reviewers and the general public using R Markdown.

Open science is becoming an increasingly desirable skill in collaborating with others and applying for academic positions. It is also becoming increasingly preferred at many journals. I hope to show that just attempting these open science practices can improve your confidence in conducting your own experiments, enhance the organisation of your data analyses, and boost your ability to share your results with others.
