Summary:

The digital world has intensified the upheavals in scholarly communication. Already profoundly transformed by the commercialization of scientific publications and the chaned role of journals, scholarly communication has sought to integrate (or to adapt itself to) the idea of open access. Supported by libraries, open access did not provide an obvious answer to library problems, especially the financial ones, while 'Big Deals' - flat-rate subscriptions to journal packages - hindered the capacity of libraries to build collections adjusted to institutional needs. In short, digital, open access and open science have raised a series of difficult questions for libraries. This presentation will attempt to provide offer answers to the following questions:

  • Is the concept of 'inside-out library' useful?
  • How the platform concept makes it possible to respond to the problems caused by treating journals as merchandise and commercial competition?
  • How the concept of research as a big conversation makes it possible to rethink journals?
  • Does an alliance of researchers, libraries and university presses offer the range of resources needed to reform scholarly communication?
