Petition | President Obama: Require open access to publicly funded research | Change.org

abernard102@gmail.com 2013-02-25

Summary:

"Every year, the federal government funds tens of billions of dollars in research. But even though taxpayers fund this research, it’s not made available to the public for free. We need open online access to this important research now! This research is vital for teachers, students, researchers, innovators, and entrepreneurs - and it shouldn’t be kept behind expensive paywalls that charge $30 per paper or $25,000 for a journal subscription. Only one federal agency, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has a public access policy and it’s been a great success! I’m only 15 years old, but with free access to research through NIH’s Public Access Policy, I was able to develop a revolutionary new test for early-stage pancreatic cancer that is faster, cheaper, and more accurate than any other test. Think of what other young people can achieve with access to this scientific research if it’s made readily available to them! Think of what researchers could do with full access! President Obama can and should implement an open access policy that requires federal agencies that fund scientific research to make the results of that research freely available on the Internet with reuse rights. The President and Congress should also support passage of the Fair Access to Science and Technology Research Act (FASTR) to make open access the law of the land. Please join me in asking him to do so."
