Summary:

"Today’s cumulative state of technology is the sum of the science and technology invented, researched and accumulated over centuries of hard work by diligent scientists. If it is not for the hard work of Kepler, Galileo, Isaac Newton, James Clark Maxwell, Nicholas Tesla, Albert Einstein; then perhaps we would not have the amenities that we enjoy today. It is a fact that the understanding of our universe is much more than ever before and many exciting pioneering and frontier research is going on to understand the creation of the universe itself. However, this is only possible with free dissemination of scientific data and information between scientists and engineers. Without this free dissemination, knowledge would be pooled by the select few and it would make it impossible for the world to progress, since knowledge will not become accumulative. Today, the situation has changed dramatically as scientific knowledge and the technological know-how is hidden behind expensive journals, company confidentiality policies as well as hidden patents. This is affecting the progress of science and technology throughout the world. In fact, it can be stated that no mind boggling invention has been invented in the past 30-40 years due to the compartmentalization of scientific knowledge. Open Access Journals and Open Access Scientific Platforms are one way to stop this from happening and to allow knowledge to propagate amongst the science and engineering community. With the presence of open access journals, young scientists and engineers can reach past knowledge (in forms of past experiments, past data, past simulations, past analysis etc) and they can build upon this foundation. They can also use these same platforms to put out their own theories, scientific accomplishments and their research to be freely reviewed and examined under scrutiny by their scientific colleagues and peers. The feedback would be instantaneous and based upon this feedback they can also steer their research toward the greater good. Knowledge would not be hidden and each building block can be put there piece by piece by young scientists and engineers all across the world. Hence, the presences of open access journals as well as self archiving sites are extremely important to advancement of the scientific community as a whole. Perhaps through this, it will be possible to love and appreciate the glamour of science once again and perhaps a new leaf can be turned in the chapter of humanity."
