"Harvard announces its support of a new initiative to provide researchers with access to a persistent digital identifier that allows authors to attach their identities to articles, datasets, equipment, media stories, citations, experiments, patents and notebooks.   The Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID) Registry is an open, non-profit, community-based effort to create and maintain a registry of unique researcher identifiers and a transparent method of linking research activities and outputs to these identifiers. Interest in ORCID by Harvard researchers will grow as publishers and funders increasingly require an ORCID for manuscript and grant proposal submission. The Office of the Provost plans a broad outreach to faculty in fall 2013—the Library community can support this effort by encouraging faculty to register for an ORCID.  The Digital Access to Scholarship at Harvard (DASH) repository supports the use of ORCID’s, and will automatically ingest them from other systems (including Harvard's PeopleSoft directory) when available.   ORCID provides individual researchers and scholars with a persistent unique identifier and, through integration with key research workflows such as manuscript and grant submission, supports automated linkages between a researcher and his/her professional activities—ensuring that work is recognized. ORCID is unique in its ability to reach across disciplines, research sectors and national boundaries.    The ORCID initiative at Harvard is led by Amy Brand, assistant provost for faculty appointments, who can be contacted with any questions."
