"Intriguing new datasets are becoming more abundant by the day — from Data.gov to a wide variety of open data hubs from states, counties and cities. They can provide rich material for journalists, but the challenge is how to keep up. Among the media support organizations every news reporter should be familiar with are the Investigative Reporters and Editors’ NICAR program and database and ProPublica’s data resource pages. For an overall introduction to the practice, see our primer on data journalism and interviews with leading practitioners Sarah Cohen of the New York Times and Steve Doig of Arizona State University. It is always worth keeping in mind the provenance of datasets — for example, from official government sources versus secondary sources such as IRE or ProPublica — as these require asking different questions of the data providers. In this blog we’ll be pointing to resources and datasets that may be familiar to the hard-core data journalism community but often remain underutilized by the press as a whole.
