Open Access to Civil Engineering | Thinking about higher education

Summary:

"Looking for an open access journal in my discipline I bumped into the the American Journal of Civil Engineering (AJCE). Link: (http://www.sciencepublishinggroup.com/journal/faq.aspx?journalid=229).  This journal is published in a bimonthly basis with the goal of '(publishing) definitive and original research papers of high standard, containing material of broad interest and of significant contribution to civil engineering, with emphasis being placed on material that is applicable to the solution of practical problems'. So far it seems like any other journal in civil engineering. Also, the journal includes around 30 subject areas of publications, for example: building materials & structures, coastal and harbor engineering, construction technology, construction economy and management, earthquake engineering, geotechnical engineering, highway engineering, etc. The journal contains basically any subject even remotely related to civil engineering, which is not as usual in my discipline.    According to the website, the articles are published within one month of submission, which is significantly shorter than traditional journals. Also there is fee per article that ranges from $90-370 according to the country (high to low income) and time of publishing (increases yearly).  Moreover, the journal specifically states its a 'peer-reviewed open access journal' ... "
