"What is apptheneum? A web based, fully open, content discovery and distribution engine designed specifically to enable content mobility amongst the sciences. Again please, minus the technobabble? We help science content like technical articles, blogs, videos and so forth, reach it’s maximum audience potential by enabling relevant content from one field of science to be visible to all the others. How do you do that? We use a different metric to distribute content. Most science content is hosted in a journal/magazine/website and is dedicated to a specific theme or topic, anyone interested in that topic subscribes or visits those properties. This approach evolved due to the sheer complexity of science and the need to focus attention on specific topics, but it limits content to just one peer group when it may well be relevant to a much broader scientific audience.

What’s the metric? We distribute content based on relevance to the reader, which we generate by first asking authors to associate their content with all fields of science that it intercedes with. Then we scan the content itself with a contextual relevance algorithm that compares the text to a topic cloud and creates a ‘relevance list’ of keywords – they are the basis with which content is distributed. A reader can find content from a field alien to their own based upon the content’s ‘relevance’ to their own interests. We even came up with a phrase for this phenomenon: Content Networking ..."
