Summary:

"The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation recently announced their new Open Access policy. See http://www.gatesfoundation.org/How-We-Work/General-Information/Open-Access-Policy for full details. In a nutshell: For new agreements signed from 1st January 2015,  all publications and underlying data need to be OA, with a CC-BY (Attribution) licence. During 2015 and 2016, a 12-month embargo period is permitted. From 2017, all publications will need to be OA immediately, no embargo period allowed. Further detail will be announced in due course on specified repositories and mechanism for APC funding. As regards existing agreements, the new policy will not be required, but is nevertheless strongly encouraged. The CC-BY requirement for Green as well as Gold ‘goes further than any other funding agency has dared’ , as noted by Nature and others."
