Summary:

"In 2007, the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, supported by the Open Society Assistance Foundation, launched two high quality open access journals - Armenian Journal of Mathematics and Armenian Journal of Physics. In 2008, EIFL, Fundamental Scientific Library of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia and Electronic Library Consortium of Armenia (ELCA) organized Open Access Awareness Raising workshop in Yerevan. Following the workshop more open access journals have been published and a national open access strategy was developed. A significant achievement during the last decade in Armenia was the conversion of 20 major scholarly journals into open access in 2010 (the journals cover the period from 1940 and include over 2000 journal issues and over 32,000 articles). In 2011 the first open access institutional repository was launched at the Institute of Radiophysics and Electronics, the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, that includes preprints of research articles, theses, dissertations and conference proceedings. Although there was an understanding and support of open access at the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, university community, especially outside the capital stayed behind the latest developments in scholarly communications ..."
