Summary:

"In a first-of-its-kind initiative in India, edX, the not-for-profit online learning enterprise composed of the leading global institutions of the xConsortium, today welcomes the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay to the X University Consortium, expanding its institutional presence into India and bringing the total number of its partner institutions to 28. EdX's platform is used by universities worldwide to develop innovative online, on-campus, and blended teaching and learning models. 'At edX, our global community continues to grow at the student and institutional levels,' said Anant Agarwal, president of edX, which recently exceeded one million student enrollees. 'India is an important market for us and is home to the largest population of edX learners outside of the United States. We are pleased that IIT Bombay has joined our distinguished group of xConsortium members, which increases global access to a world-class education and adds a rich variety of new courses to edX's offerings.' The addition of IIT Bombay enables edX to advance its mission to provide high-quality courses to everyone, everywhere and continue to serve the large international student body already using edX on a daily basis. Joining the xConsortium enables IIT Bombay to develop next-generation online and blended learning courses, as well as fill a specific professional development need in India: training engineering teachers. With approximately 5,000 engineering colleges in the country and student enrollment in these colleges now over 1.25 million, IIT Bombay will use edX's open source platform to increase the number of qualified and experienced engineering educators in India and beyond. IIT Bombay plans to make several of its courses available to students across India and to the world. The insitutition joins founding members Harvard and the Massachusetts of Technology (MIT) and 25 other leading institutions worldwide. IIT Bombay's courses will be hosted on edX's open source platform at www.edx.org ..."
