Summary:

"F1000, the innovative biomedical publishing group, has strengthened its world-leading faculty of researchers in biology and medicine with the appointment of Nobel Laureate and former National Institutes of Health (NIH) director Harold Varmus as the Chairman of its International Advisory Board.  Harold Varmus, who played a key role in introducing open access publishing, is currently the Lewis Thomas University Professor at Weill Cornell Medicine and a staff associate at the New York Genome Center. He will begin chairing the advisory group for F1000 – a community of over 11,000 biomedical experts who help scientists to discover, discuss and publish research – on November 2.   As NIH Director, Varmus established PubMed Central, a large public digital library for biomedical research in 1999, in conjunction with David Lipman at the National Library of Medicine.  A few years later, he and two colleagues, Pat Brown and Mike Eisen, founded the Public Library of Science (PLOS), a non-profit open-access publisher that now produces several on-line journals, including PLOS ONE. Varmus is an author of more than 350 scientific papers and five books, including an introduction to the genetics of cancer for a general audience and his 2009 memoir, The Art and Politics of Science, which is also available on-line via PubMed Central ..."
