Summary:

"My research involves analyzing the laws and policies of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. My main areas of research are the international laws of territorial acquisition. Recently, however, I’ve been using quantitative data analysis methods to measure political support for Australia’s Antarctic presence. The use of metadata is an increasingly valuable way to complement traditional research in political science and law. I’m always looking at ways my research can be most useful and applicable to the broader research community and the public. Open Access is by far the best way to facilitate that, especially alongside popular social media platforms. However, funding isn’t always accessible, and the price of Open Access can be out of reach of young researchers. Open Access means more citations, more article reads, and most importantly more engagement with researchers and the public. These are essential elements of future success in academia. Winning the #GoldFriday competition means more than you can imagine. Only last week my first major Taylor & Francis article was published, but I hadn’t yet secured a grant to pay the article publishing charge. My Altmetric score has been reasonably high, but my article reads have been low. This is truly a wonderful way to finish off this research. Thank you to Taylor & Francis for this lovely, and generous, surprise."
