"In 1880 the first president of the prestigious John Hopkins University, Daniel Coit Gilman, stated that the ‘noblest duties of the academy was to advance knowledge and to diffuse it, not merely among those who attend the daily lectures, but far and wide’. Just like a University, a publisher’s aim is to circulate research among the academic community. Although these primary aims are similar, a publisher has to make money while doing so and at the rate in which scientific research is evolving, instant access is more paramount than ever before. However with the cost of subscriptions rising has the industry moved away from Gilman’s inspirational words? Open access (OA) is becoming prevalent in today’s increasingly digital environment, being referred to as the ‘rising star of scholarly publishing’.
