Facilitating Support for OA journals

Summary:
Use the link to access more information about the JISC call for proposals: “"The Finch report has stated that universities will have to be increasingly efficient in the way they pay for open access publishing in the form of article processing charges (APCs). Responding to the recommendation, JISC and the Wellcome Trust, on behalf of the UK Open Access Implementation Group (OAIG) are commissioning work to investigate how we can help universities, publishers and funders manage the charges efficiently and also what role an intermediary might play in making the process work smoothly...." Comment: This call for proposals focuses on gold OA, but is compatible with green OA and green OA mandates. It focuses on implementing the Finch recommendations for paying publication fees at fee-based OA journals, but is compatible with the view that the Research Councils UK are not bound by the Finch recommendations. It's also compatible with the new RCUK policy itself, which has its own mechanism for helping to pay publication fees at fee-based OA journals. In short, don't spurn this call for proposals just because you may support green OA over gold OA, or support the RCUK policy over the Finch recommendations. If we support OA journals, and we should, then we still need ways to support them efficiently. If you respond to this call, please consider ways to support no-fee OA journals alongside fee-based OA journals. Remember that 70% of OA journals charge no author-side fees at all . Unfortunately, recent calls to support gold OA uniformly overlook that significant majority.”
