[From Google's English] "On 17 September I was at the information session on Open Accessparticipate in Bern.  What is remarkable? What struck me?  Initially, two Swiss publishers of scientific journals were presented: Karger and MDPI.  Karger is a long-established scientific publishing house , the fourth in the Generation is performed and can look back on a 120-year history. 4 Gabriella Karger of the Generation represented the publisher.Interestingly, the publishing house was founded in Berlin, then then the company reined in Basel. Karger laid open access and conventional paid subscription magazines.  To MDPI there is a little story. In the 80s, the chemist Dr. Shu-Kun Lin had to witness such an extensive collection of molecules by Ciba-Geigy in the retirement of a work colleague was simply discarded. He wanted to create an alternative future and founded a non-profit molecule database . From these molecular database to scientific journals, which were then outsourced to a publishing developed. Since the abbreviation MDPI of Molecular Diversity Preservation International had been established they were looking for a name for the publishing house that fits this shortcut: Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute . MDPI is a pure open access publishing and the publications appear only electronically. It uses the CC BY license. MDPI busy, if I remember correctly, two-thirds of the people in China and a third in Switzerland.The site in China allowed to keep costs competitive. The founder of MDPI was present at the event ..."
