Summary:

"Changes are afoot for the Altmetric data! In January 2014, we will be extending our tracked sources to include pre- and post-publication peer reviews of articles from the Publons platform ... Publons was first launched in early 2013, and aims to serve the needs of the wider peer-review community, including authors, researchers, and the reviewers themselves. The site currently has over 400 registered users, and is on track to have several hundred reviews on it by the end of the year. All of the post-publication reviews submitted are open access (pre-publication reviews can be open or closed), and a ‘review score’ is awarded to each paper to help easily identify the best quality research. Every review is checked by a Publons editor to ensure authenticity and that quality standards are maintained.

Upon publication, each review can be endorsed by Publons members – those with enough endorsements are assigned a DOI, meaning that reviewers can add their contributions to their own publication record and get credit for their time and input. At top level, the drive comes from the desire for more open, transparent peer-review, and the opportunity for greater debate amongst the community. A detailed paper (and discussion) describing some of the early ideas behind the creation of Publons can be found in Publon #1, the first paper to be listed and reviewed on the Publons platform.  Following the January integration, reviews posted on Publons will appear in a new tab within corresponding Altmetric article details pages. Reviews within the new tab (see screenshot) will contribute to the Altmetric score and donut visualisation."
