Summary:

"In response to our Call for Proposals for the Emerging Impacts of Open Data in the South project we received 83 concept notes. Next week a team of open data academics and experts will be meeting, hosted by the Berkman Centre at Harvard University, to review and short list concept notes for the next stage of evaluation.  Of the proposals we received: Applicants came from 26 different developing countries (the map above shows the countries that concept notes were received from); The research proposed covers open data in 30 different countries with many concept notes outlining proposals for comparative research; Concept notes covered a wide range of thematic areas, including budget monitoring, judicial data, smart cities, extractive industries, aid transparency,  corruption monitoring, agriculture, womens empowerment, and consumer rights.  The response to the call we received demonstrates that governments, companies and civil society across the South are actively exploring open data, both where national or city-level open data portals exist, and where open data comes from other sources. Following the evaluation workshop next week, we aim to get back to everyone who submitted a concept note by mid to late-October."
