"The Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) applauds the support of theConference des recteurs et des principaux des universités du Québec (CREPUQ) for the Open Access movement,which aims to achieve free, immediate online access to the results of publicly‐funded scholarly, scientific andtechnical information. 'We congratulate CREPUQ universities for lending their full support to the Open Access movement,' said TomHickerson, President of the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL). 'Their announcement is both timelyand significant as institutions across the country actively seek ways to provide the broadest possible disseminationfor and access to research funded by Canadian taxpayers. CARL fully shares CREPUQ’s goals of advancingknowledge, facilitating researchers’ work, and helping them to maximize the impact of their work.' CREPUQ’s decision to sign the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities on October 24, coincides with the ten year anniversary of the Budapest Open Access Initiative, which provides therationale and philosophy behind Open Access and to which CREPUQ adheres already. By reaffirming its support tothese principles during Open Access Week 2012, CREPUQ provides a fine example for the rest of the country inworking towards universal free access to the results of publicly‐funded research.
